Welcome to the course Foundations of Mathematics. This is an open, online course on basic mathematical techniques for linguistics and psychology.

Grading: If you want to self-evaluate your progress, you can take five automated quizzes in this course.

About this course

This is a foundational course on Mathematics intended for students of Cognitive Science, Cognitive Systems, Psychology, and Linguistics. We are going to cover the following topics:

  1. Functions
  2. Differentiation
  3. Matrix and vector algebra
  4. Integration and multivariate calculus
  5. Sets, probability, and random variables

The content for the course will be in the form of video-recorded lectures and lecture notes. You can refer to the book “Mathematical Techniques” by Jordan and Smith as an additional resource for practice. Most of the examples and exercises in this course will focus on the applications of mathematical tools in Cognitive Science and Linguistics.
